Coal Plant Investor 'Manny Pangilinan' Reacts to 'Gina Lopez' as New DENR Secretary

Mining officials of companies and industries these days have been reacting after the appointment of ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Chairperson as the new Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary.


Environmentalist and vocal anti-coal mining advocate Regina “Gina” Lopez is the new DENR secretary said that  “mining has a pathetic track record” and that “wherever there’s mining, the people are poor”.


One of the major investor of coal plant stressed that " Whoever assumes the DENR post, whether it's Lopez or someone else, it will just be “business as usual” for the companies.


On the sidelines of AIM for Change, Pangilinan said that, “The elephant in the room is Gina Lopez, I apologize for the comparison, but first of all, let me say this, it’s entirely the prerogative of the president to name whoever he wants to name and I respect that he has nominated Gina Lopez to be DENR Secretary. We respect that and so be it".


“If he thinks she is the right person then we respect that. What’s our attitude is that it’s business as usual. We should give her a chance to articulate her policy. It reflects the policy of the president as well,” Pangilinan stressed.

Incoming Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella stressed that Duterte is supportive of "every venture" that will contribute to the country's growth.

"The president is not anti-mining. He actually supports each and every venture that contributes to the health of the Philippine economy," he said.


Duterte emphasized and said that "Improve on it , If you do not do it I will cancel the permit. In making money out of the precious metals of the earth that belongs to the Filipino people, you have to do it right, if you cannot do it right then get out of mining."
